Proceedings begin with an assembly at the Cross Kirk, consisting of Principals elect, the Beltane Committee, Peebles Silver Band, Peebles Pipe Band, various organisations and of course the public. All these bodies collect at the County War Memorial in the Chambers Quadrangle and form a procession to the Cross Kirk. After collecting and getting into formation around 5.45pm they set off for the Cross Kirk
At 6.00pm the Warden of the Cross Kirk is installed and then takes the reins and conducts the Inaugural Service. Assited by local clergy the service takes shape and the proceeding of the coming week are started.
Once the service is over, all attendees, form a procession and escorted by the bands head back to the Quadrangle and disperse to look forward to the week ahead.
Due to the poor weather conditions, this year (2006), the service was held in the Parish Church.
