The Proclamation of Beltane Fair and the Burgh Bounds
Ross Hunter reads the Proclamation in 2011
Formerly in the days of the Town Council, the Beltane Fair was ‘Cried’ or Proclaimed by the Town Clerk, but with the demise of the Town Council in 1975 this duty was devolved mainly to one of the local solicitors in the town on a rotational basis, departing from this formula occasional to allow the local Procurator Fiscal to the local courts and local authority solicitors to undertake the task. The task of Proclaiming the Boundaries is a historic and traditional role and plays an important part in the Beltane Festival.
Ross Hunter is an associate partner at Cullen Kilshaw. Born in Hawick he spent most of his life in Edinburgh. Ross attended Dundee University where he obtained a diploma in Legal Practice. In2003 he moved to Innerleithen with his wife Jill and two children. Jill has ridden the Marches previously. Ross is a keen runner and enjoys walking his 2 dogs and taking part in some erratic golf.
Thanking the Chairman and the committee, Ross paid thanks for being asked and stated it was a great honour for both him and his wife and family. He looked forward to helping out at this year’s festival and hoped it would be a memorable Beltane Festival 2011.
