The Proclamation of Beltane Fair and the Burgh Bounds

Formerly in the days of the Town Council, the Beltane Fair was ‘Cried’ or Proclaimed by the Town Clerk, but with the demise of the Town Council in 1975 this duty was devolved mainly to one of the local solicitors in the town on a rotational basis, departing from this formula occasional to allow the local Procurator Fiscal to the local courts and local authority solicitors to undertake the task. The task of Proclaiming the Boundaries is a historic and traditional role abd plays an important part in the Beltane Festival.

“ In the 1980s I had the honour of Calling the Boundaries and it is one of these days that i will remember for a long time.
“I consider it a great honour to be considered a second time. The Beltane is a wonderful occasion and brings together a real sense of community spirit”
