The Crowning Lady

The honour of the crowning lady originally went to the wife of the town Provost, but eventually this choice was elected by the committee to allow this honour to be bestowed on a lady worthy of the name ‘Crowning Lady’.It is a great privilege to be Beltane Queen but to also be asked to be the Crowning Lady, in the more mature years, was an honour shared by few. The only ladies to achieve this are Sheila Murray, (Beltane Queen 1940, Crowning Lady 1990) and Margaret Jack (Beltane Queen 1941, Crowning Lady 1999).

Crowning Lady 2010 - Catherine Hamilton

Crowning Lady - Catherine Hamilton - born and brought up in Glasgow. Moved to Peebles in 1973. Worked in Litsters for 22 years prior to closure in 1997. Has worked in Castle warehouse for last 13 years and also does part-time work for Sainsbury. Started helping out with Brownies in January 1974 (through a casual conversation) and took over in 1975. Brownie/Guide centenary this year and she has given 35 years service! A few of her Brownies have gone on to become Beltane Queens.

Crowning Lady, Catherine Hamilton, who works at Castle Warehouse in the Old Town, admitted she's glad that her secret was finally out. She said: "It was becoming increasingly difficult to keep it to myself. To be asked came as a real surprise and I was delighted to accept. I'm really looking forward to it but I'm glad I don't have to learn how to horse ride for it."
