Crowning Lady

Keep up to date with the Beltane News!

The honour of the crowning lady originally went to the wife of the town Provost, but eventually this choice was elected by the committee to allow this honour to be bestowed on a lady worthy of the name ‘Crowning Lady’.It is a great privilege to be Beltane Queen but to also be asked to be the Crowning Lady, in the more mature years, was an honour shared by few. The only ladies to achieve this are Sheila Murray, (Beltane Queen 1940, Crowning Lady 1990) and Margaret Jack (Beltane Queen 1941, Crowning Lady 1999).

Crowning Lady 2008 - Eva Bisset

Born in Edinburgh, Eve has lived in Peebles since 1979 upon her return with husband Peter from South Africa. Eva is heavily involved in the community with Tweed Theatre and is Chairman of the Tweed Green Playgroup as well as being a member of the Peebles March Riders’ Association.

Eva is well known to all past Beltane Queens and her courts through her hospitality, by allowing the queen and court into her home in the Kingsmeadows Road.

Eva says after her appointment to the public in the Burgh hall. “I always wondered what it would be like to when members of the Beltane Committee came to your door?” “Now I know and I am delighted and honored to accept this. I just feel so happy.”

Upon arriving in Peebles Eva uttered the words “What is Beltane “ to the frowning looks of others around her whilst buying a morning paper. Now she knows Eva signs off saying “ This year is going to be the most important Beltane of my life”
